International Center

The conference will bring together scholars from 68 countries to share their comparative approaches and multidisciplinary knowledge civil society, philanthropy, and the nongovernmental sector. Working with researchers at FUNCIVA, as well as USD students and TBI staff, Dr. Shirk will conduct field research in Mexico, Spain, Morocco, and Gibraltar, generate research papers, and produce a final report that will serve as the basis for future publication and funding requests to support the continuation and expansion of this research initiative on comparative border experiences.

National Fellowship Program

Sovereign debt and access to international credit influence the range of choices available to even the most powerful nations yet international relations literature largely overlooks the impact of finance on state behavior. The dissertation augments the burgeoning historical literature on the American carceral state, and demonstrates that in order to understand the vast scope of modern coercive state power, scholars must consider the dense legal terrain of American cities, and account for the considerable power wielded by local policing institutions to define the boundaries of legality. Lee is a comparative institutional sociologist with research and teaching interests in the following areas: political sociology, social movements, economic sociology, law and society, sociology of knowledge and culture, urban and environmental sociology, and research methods.

Funding, Fellowships, and Prizes

One award is available to a GSAS student who intends to pursue a teaching career in history, literature, philosophy or classical and medieval languages. The program seeks young scholars who are interested in strengthening their dissertation research plans through exposure to the theories, literatures methods, and intellectual traditions of disciplines outside their own. The Council of American Overseas Research Centers Multi-Country Fellowship Program supports advanced regional or trans-regional research in the humanities, social sciences, or allied natural sciences for the students.S. doctoral candidates and scholars who have already earned their Ph.D. Preference will be given to candidates examining comparative and or cross-regional research.

Amount: $3000
Department Fellowships and Awards

The Department awards this endowed fellowship to an outstanding student of Comparative Literature who has completed all requirements for the Ph.D. except the dissertation.

Komar Shideler Study Abroad Scholarship

Preference will be given to Comparative Literature and Scandinavian Languages majors minors, but the university will also consider all applicants with high financial need who have not studied abroad regardless of major.

Anthony C.Yu Dissertation Fellowship

Yu Dissertation Fellowship, a new endowment in memory of a beloved alumnus, colleague, mentor, and friend. Mitchell concluded the reception by announcing the creation of the Yu Dissertation Fellowship. John and Jane Colman make gift of $900K to endow the Craft of Teaching Program.
