FLAS Fellowships are awarded to students for a formal UC Berkeley or overseas academic program of full-time study during the academic year, including language and area international studies courses. Graduate students wishing to use an award for a formal study abroad program must be at the intermediate or advanced level of language proficiency, or at the beginning level if an appropriate beginning language program is not available in the the students.S. Prior approval from the the students.S. Education is required for all FLAS language study abroad. To be eligible, an student must have completed at least two semesters of study of the target language by the start of the fellowship.
German Studies Cornell Arts Sciences
The German Studies at Cornell will provide an additional stipend to assist with fees and other costs while in Germany. Applications are solicited from graduate students working in the field of German Studies at Cornell University. Graduate students from the German Studies are given priority. Two Exchange Fellowships for study at the University of Heidelberg Germany cover tuition and fees plus provide a monthly stipend of 800 Euro for ten months.

Students of German are eligible for a wide range of scholarships and grants awarded by national and international organizations, as well as by the governments of the US, Germany, Austria, and Switzerland. German Studies Research Grant DAAD for 1-2 months. These are sponsored by the US government for study or teaching in a German-speaking country, usually for a year. The Congress-Bundestag Youth Exchange for Young Professionals is a fellowship funded by the German Bundestag and the students.S. State, that annually provides 75 American and 75 German young professionals, between the ages of 18½–24, the opportunity to spend one year in each other’s countries, studying, interning, and living with hosts on a cultural immersion program.

Germanic Languages and Literatures at Illinois
Information and assistance in applying for funding from these and other sources are provided by the director of graduate studies. The Department selects graduate students each year to study at the university exchange universities: Göttingen, Greifswald, and Heidelberg. The Department regularly selects a graduate student to serve as administrative assistant to the resident director of the university study abroad program in Vienna. Academic-year fellowships and assistantships for study abroad count as one semester of financial aid for students who have not yet passed the preliminary examination for the doctorate, but as a full year at the dissertation stage.
Knobloch Scholarship is for declared majors or minors of French Studies, German Studies, Russian Area Studies, Chinese Area Studies, Latin American Studies and or Hispanic Studies. The Friends of Milan Kovacovic Scholarship is for declared majors or minors in French Studies. Students with a strong academic record are eligible to apply for these scholarships whether or not they are going abroad, although preference will be given when possible to those planning to study abroad in an approved program. Conant Scholarship is for declared majorsor minors in German Studies, and carries a stipend of $2,000. The Arnoldo and Neva Hax Scholarship in German Studies is for students enrolled in the College of Liberal Arts studying in the area of German Studies.

DAAD University Summer Course GrantThis program provides scholarships to attend a broad range of three to four-week summer courses at German universities which focus mainly on German language and literary, cultural, political and economic aspects of modern and contemporary Germany. DAAD German Studies Research GrantThis specialized DAAD program offers German Studies Research Grants to highly-qualified and graduate students who are nominated by their department program chairs. The grant may be used for short-term research in Germany.

Graduating seniors or recent graduates are eligible for a Study Scholarship for Artists and Musicians, General Study Scholarship, Research Grant, German Studies Research Grant, Bundestag Internship, and Research Internships in Science and Engineering. Every year, the Honor Society of Phi Kappa Phi awards sixty Fellowships of $5,000 each and forty Awards of Excellence of $2,000 each to members entering the first year of graduate or professional study. The organization does this through the intensive study provided by participation in a Junior Summer Institute , through partnerships with universities across the country, and through an alumni network that provides opportunities to connect with nearly 4000 individuals who share the same interest in public service.
