Postdoctoral Fellowship Information

The Society for the Humanities at Cornell University sponsors postdoctoral teaching-research fellowships in the humanities, each awarded for a two-year period. The Bill and Carol Fox Center for Humanistic Inquiry at Emory University provides up to three annual postdoctoral fellowships for an academic year of study, teaching, and residence in the Center. The Humanities Center at Harvard University offers twelve month postdoctoral fellowships to support projects in the humanities and the allied social sciences that share the Center’s commitment to interdisciplinarity and internationalism. The National Humanities Center at the Research Triangle Park, North Carolina provides 9 month residential fellowships for advanced study in all areas of research with a connection to the humanities.

Newcombe Doctoral Dissertation Fellowships are designed to encourage original and significant study of ethical or religious values in all fields of the humanities and social sciences, and particularly to help Ph.D. candidates in these fields complete their dissertation work in a timely manner. The Center for Italian Modern Art awards a number of Fellowships each year to support the study of Italian modern and contemporary art by scholars at the master’s, doctoral, and post-doctoral level.

Funding Opportunities

Summer Stipends support individuals pursuing advanced research that is of value to humanities scholars, general audiences, or both. The National Humanities Center, a residential institute for advanced study in history, languages and literature, philosophy, and other fields in North Carolina, offers 40 residential fellowships for advanced study in the humanities to scholars of demonstrated achievement and to promising younger scholars . The Tsakopoulos Hellenic Collection Library Research Fellowship Program supports use of the Tsakopoulos Hellenic Collection at California State University, Sacramento, including early through contemporary materials across the social sciences and humanities relating to Greece, the Balkans, the Ottoman Empire and modern Turkey, and the surrounding region .

Interdisciplinary Opportunities in the Humanities and Social Sciences

The Institute at Brown for Environment and Society is able to host up to three fellows in the humanities and humanistic social sciences who have an interest in the intersections between their research and environmental scholarship. The John Nicholas Brown Center for Public Humanities is able to host up to two fellowships for students with experience in Public Humanities. IBES offers fellowships for up to three 5th or 6th-year graduate students in the humanities and humanistic social sciences who have an interest in the intersections between their research and environmental scholarship. Digital Scholarship Lab is able to host one fellow whose dissertation research employs methodologies related to data visualization, digital humanities, geospatial data analysis or broadly the use of technology in the study of visual and material culture.

Opportunities for Funding in Humanities and Fine Arts

Liebmann Fellowships support graduate study in any field of the humanities, social sciences, or natural sciences The Fund provides grants to students actively working for peace and justice. The Foundation makes targeted grants for work in all major areas of the social sciences, including anthropology, area studies, economics, political science, psychology, sociology, and urban studies, as well as newer areas such as evaluation research. Kluge Center at the Library of Congress announces a new Kluge Fellowship in Digital Studies to examine the impact of the digital revolution on society, culture and international relations using the Library’s collections and resources. Russian East European Institute

A number of other departments on campus offer Foreign Language and Area Studies fellowships, including the Center for the Study of Global Change, the Inner Asian and Uralic National Resource Center , and the Institute for European Studies. Boren Fellowships provide up to $30,000 to the students.S. graduate students to add an important international and language component to their graduate education through specialization in area study, language study, or increased language proficiency. ACLS offers fellowships and grants in over one dozen programs, for research in the humanities and humanistic social sciences.

Baker-Nord Center for the Humanities

Ohio Humanities Ohio Humanities accepts grant applications for projects that have humanities content and utilize humanities professionals. Residential fellowships for an academic year, semester, or summer are awarded in all three areas of study to scholars from around the world. Outstanding scholars from across the United States and than thirty other nations have been awarded fellowships for advanced study at the National Humanities Center. Radcliffe Institute for Advanced Study, Harvard University Fellowships are designed to support scholars, scientists, artists, and writers of exceptional promise and demonstrated accomplishments who wish to pursue work in academic and professional fields and in the creative arts.

Stanford Humanities

The Mellon Fellowship of Scholars in the Humanities brings outstanding younger scholars to Stanford on two-year fellowships Each fellow is affiliated with a Stanford humanities department, which arranges teaching and office space. The Fellowship invites major figures in the humanities to present public lectures and participate in small group sessions with the fellows, and the fellows gather throughout the year, to present their research to one another and for professional development workshops devoted to pedagogy, publishing, and mentoring. The Humanities Center is pleased to announce the sixth year of awarding Hume Humanities Honors Fellowships. Each year, eight seniors are selected for the Hume Humanities Honors fellowship.
