FLAS Fellowships are awarded to students for a formal UC Berkeley or overseas academic program of full-time study during the academic year, including language and area international studies courses. Graduate students wishing to use an award for a formal study abroad program must be at the intermediate or advanced level of language proficiency, or at the beginning level if an appropriate beginning language program is not available in the the students.S. With funding for the the students.S. Education’s Title VI program, the Stone Center for Latin American Studies is able to offer a special fellowship program to a select group of students. FLAS fellowships are available to those graduate students who are the students.S. citizens or permanent residents, and are in need of attaining language proficiency in Portuguese, Haitian Creole, or an indigenous Latin American language. There are awards available for both the academic year as part of the regular admissions process and for summer intensive language study for currently enrolled graduate students.

While scholars of environmental policy, American business, or working-class communities have tended to analyze the history of each subfield separately, this project draws on the history of capitalism, critical geography, and interdisciplinary studies of regulation to argue that the shared history of policymakers, business people, and workers did not unfold in insolated silos. Olsson teaching and research examine the twentieth-century United States in global perspective, with an emphasis on agriculture, food, environment, rural history, and Latin America, particularly Mexico.
