Foreign Language and Area Studies Fellowships

FLAS Fellowships are awarded to students for a formal UC Berkeley or overseas academic program of full-time study during the academic year, including language and area international studies courses. Graduate students wishing to use an award for a formal study abroad program must be at the intermediate or advanced level of language proficiency, or at the beginning level if an appropriate beginning language program is not available in the the students.S. Prior approval from the the students.S. Education is required for all FLAS language study abroad. The summer competition is open to graduate students and s studying a modern Middle Eastern language at the intermediate or advanced level.

Funding Opportunities

Paul Celan Fellowships for Translators support translations of canonical texts and contemporary key works in the humanities, social sciences and cultural studies from Eastern to Western, Western to Eastern, or between two Eastern European languages. Robert Bosch Fellowships on South Eastern Europe support junior and senior researchers in the humanities or social sciences, who are affiliated with a research institution in the region and pursue research on South-Eastern Europe. The National Humanities Center, a residential institute for advanced study in history, languages and literature, philosophy, and other fields in North Carolina, offers 40 residential fellowships for advanced study in the humanities to scholars of demonstrated achievement and to promising younger scholars .

Near Eastern Studies Students are encouraged to seek out external funding from entities including the the students.S. government, NGOs, and NYU, for study on-site during the academic year as well as international study during breaks.

Student Research Awards

Jackie also was awarded, but ultimately turned down, a postdoctoral fellowship from the University Center for Human Values and the Center for Information Technology at Princeton University, and was an alternate for a postdoctoral fellowship in regional studies at the Davis Center, Harvard University. Awards include funding to cover specialization in area study, language study, or increased language proficiency.

Graduate Professional Student Grants

East Asian Studies Summer Language Mini-Grants support the summer language study of Japanese, Chinese and Korean. The European Studies Council awards grants for language study in amounts up to $3,000 for graduate students at Yale to support intensive structured training in a modern European language during the summer. The European Union Studies Program invites applications for the European Union Studies Summer Grants from graduate and students whose work or research involves the European Union or some aspect of European integration. Grants are also available to European and Russian Studies and IR Master’s students at the end of their first year of study.

Boren Scholarship These scholarships are available to students who study in critical world areas such as Africa, Asia , Eastern and Central Europe, Latin and South America and the Middle East.

Gladys Prior Award Winners

The Gladys Prior Awards for Career Teaching Excellence are among the largest monetary awards for teachers in the nation. As a teacher with 13 years of experience, Tim has garnered impressive awards that include the Presidential Award for Excellence in Science and Mathematics Teaching, UNF Outstanding Alumnus Award, and he has been the recipient of several teaching fellowships. A parent said, Mr. Jackson isn't just teaching math and science, he is developing thinkers. A teacher for 36 years, Robbie is a National Board Certified Teacher, a Princeton Scholar, and a Fulbright scholar who spent three weeks in Japan. Kim has been teaching 28 years. Pam has been teaching for 23 years.

Office of Distinguished Scholarships

Scholars design their study experience by choosing one of six academic concentrations that direct their electives and field studies. This year, Boren scholars and fellows will live in 38 countries throughout Africa, Asia, Central and Eastern Europe, Eurasia, Latin America and the Middle East. Benjamin Kompa, a fourth-year student at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, has been named a recipient of the prestigious Churchill Scholarship, a research-focused award that provides funding to outstanding American students for a year of master’s study in science, mathematics and engineering at Churchill College, based at the University of Cambridge in England.

Additional Scholarship Programs

The scholarship is designated in order of priority, for summer language study, semester or year programs with the Institute of European Studies , or junior year abroad programs with other institutions. The Scales International Studies Scholarship supports study outside the United States.

Study Abroad Scholarships

HBCU Scholarships For students enrolled at Historically Black Colleges and Universities The Middle East and Islamic Studies Scholarship For students participating in programs with significant Middle Eastern and or Islamic studies content. Boren Awards for International Study Boren Scholarships provide up to $20,000 to US students to study abroad in areas of the world that are critical to US interests and underrepresented in study abroad, including Africa, Asia, Central and Eastern Europe, Eurasia, Latin America, and the Middle East.
