Public Impact Fellows

Currently, Rachel serves as the Graduate Association of Biomedical Engineering Students president connecting local industry to BME graduate students. Beside research, Sara holds various leadership positions including co-chair of ICS Engineering DECADE student council, graduate interconnect peer mentor, and GRC advisory board member.

Materials Science and Engineering

Sloan Foundation Minority Ph.D. Program—managed by the National Action Council for Minorities in Engineering —offers substantial scholarship support, mentoring and guidance to underrepresented minority students beginning their doctoral work in engineering, natural science, and mathematics. The University of Maryland Sloan Ph.D. Network in Materials Science Engineering and Bioengineering serves Ph.D.-seeking students—especially those interested in an academic career—in the Materials Science and Engineering and the Graduate Program in Bioengineering Program activities are open to African American, American Indian Native American, and Latino students who are the students.S. citizens or have a green card and who have been accepted into the University of Maryland graduate program in MSE, or its graduate program in BioE.

Funding Scholarship Opportunities

National Defense Science and Engineering Graduate Fellowship Program The NDSEG fellowship of the US Defense is intended for students at or near the beginning of graduate study for doctoral degrees in mathematical, physical, biological and engineering sciences. Energy Computational Science Graduate Fellowship ProgramThis fellowship is for exceptional seniors or first or second year graduate students planning full-time study toward a PhD in the physical, engineering, computer, mathematical, or life sciences with emphasis in high performance computing.

Biomedical Engineering

Kirschstein National Research Service Award training grant from the National Institute of Biomedical Imaging and Bioengineering Biomedical engineering graduate students are also eligible for the NIH-funded Biomedical Engineering Big Data Training Grant.


In addition to possible teaching and research assistantships and national options such as NSF and NSH grants, bioengineering graduate students have the opportunity to receive fellowships and training grants established for University of Illinois students.
