Fellowship and Award Opportunities

Each year the Humanities Initiative generally offers three Research Fellowships to graduate students in the humanities and art disciplines, including but not limited to history, art history, music, philosophy, cultural studies, literary and language studies, religious studies, drama and performance studies, cinema studies, and gender studies. Academic Year FLAS fellowships are for students engaged in a domestic or overseas program of full-time language and area or international studies coursework. Completed FLAS fellowship application form and completed career interest form, available from the Center for European and Mediterranean Studies site personal statement, current transcript, and one letter of recommendation from advisor, department chair, or language instructor. Instructorships Teaching positions within the French, 5 courses per year. Native French speaker excellent teaching evaluations strong recommendation from the Director of Language Programs.

Funding, Fellowships, and Prizes

Student Program offers opportunities for recent graduates, postgraduate candidates, developing professionals and artists to conduct career-launching study and research abroad. Jensen Fellowship is awarded for at least six continuous months of study in France.

Foreign Language and Area Studies Fellowships

FLAS Fellowships are awarded to students for a formal UC Berkeley or overseas academic program of full-time study during the academic year, including language and area international studies courses. Graduate students wishing to use an award for a formal study abroad program must be at the intermediate or advanced level of language proficiency, or at the beginning level if an appropriate beginning language program is not available in the the students.S. Prior approval from the the students.S. Education is required for all FLAS language study abroad. To be eligible, an student must have completed at least two semesters of study of the target language by the start of the fellowship.

Foreign Language and Area Studies Fellowships

Students may apply for funding for other LCTLs beyond Spanish and Portuguese if they provide a plan for a full year of language training and area studies according to FLAS guidelines. To be eligible, a graduate student must have completed at least two semesters of study of the target language by the start of the fellowship.

Funding

The French is committed to providing full funding to all doctoral students for the duration of the PhD degree. Beginning in their second year, and during the third and fifth years, graduate students teach one course per semester in the French language program.

List of Fellowships and Scholarships

Boren Scholarships provide up to $20,000 to the students.S. students to study abroad for one year or in areas of the world that are critical to the students.S. interests and underrepresented in study abroad, including Africa, Asia, Central Eastern Europe, Eurasia, Latin American, and the Middle East. Graduating seniors or recent graduates are eligible for a Study Scholarship for Artists and Musicians, General Study Scholarship, Research Grant, German Studies Research Grant, Bundestag Internship, and Research Internships in Science and Engineering. After earning a master degree, each James Madison Fellow must teach American history, American government, or social studies in grades 7-12 for no less than one year for each full academic year of study under the fellowship.

Graduate Professional Student Grants

The Georges Lurcy Trust will provide one fellowship during the academic year to a Yale Graduate or Doctoral student of exceptional merit whose dissertation addresses an aspect of French Studies and requires a year of research in Europe, specifically France. Eligible languages include: Czech, Dutch, Finnish, French , German , Modern Greek, Polish, Portuguese, Italian, Russian, Hungarian, Romanian, Serbo-Croatian, Ukrainian, and Spanish Academic year fellowships are for beginner through advanced language study at Yale.
