Student Funding and Finance

This prestigious award is given annually to one meritorious student in the Biochemical and Molecular Nutrition Program at the Gerald J. The purpose of this award is to recruit and retain the highest quality students in the Biochemical and Molecular Nutrition Program who intend to pursue doctoral degrees. Priority will be given to those applicants who can demonstrate a strong need for this scholarship in order to enroll and or continue in their doctoral studies in the Biochemical and Molecular Nutrition Program.

Financial Aid

PhD students in the Integrative Physiology Molecular Medicine Doctoral Program or in the Cellular Integrative Physiology Doctoral Program receive stipend support in the form of fellowships or research assistantships that do not require teaching.

Andrew Schwartz Andrew Schwartz, a graduate student working with Dr. Yatrik Shah, successfully competed for a Ruth L. Kirschstein National Research Service Award , which is awarded by the National Institutes of Health to outstanding PhD students. Tova Berg Tova Berg, a graduate student in Sue Moenter’s lab successfully competed for an F30 Ruth L. Kirschstein National Research Service Award , which is awarded by the National Institutes of Health to outstanding dual MD and PhD degree students. Fangyun Tian Fangyun Tian, a 5th year PhD candidate in Dr. Jimo Borjigin’s lab successfully competed for American Heart Association predoctoral fellowship. Kirschstein National Research Service Award , which is awarded by the National Institutes of Health to outstanding predoctoral fellows.

Smithsonian Fellowships and Internships

In addition to the standard conditions for Smithsonian Postdoctoral Fellowships (see below), the following : (1) the research topic must be in an area of science or culture supported by Smithsonian that is also appropriate to Mpala (2) most of the fellowship period should be spent in residence at Mpala [except if there is good reason not to, explain in the proposal] (3) the project must be a meaningful collaboration with an appropriate Smithsonian unit (collaboration with multiple units is encouraged) and include an endorsement from a Smithsonian sponsor and (4) the fellow must also collaborate with an appropriate Kenyan organization (usually National Museums of Kenya or Kenya Wildlife Service collaboration with the international organizations in Kenya, such as the International Center of Insect Physiology and Ecology (www.
