Enhancing Science, Technology, EnginEering, and Math Educational Diversity Research Education Experiences
NIBIB’s proactive approach to ensuring a diverse and sustainable biomedical workforce is to develop innovative programs that target roadblocks at critical transition points in the biomedical research pipeline that hinder the participation of underrepresented populations. The success of a funded program will be evaluated based on specific participant outcomes, including transition into an Advanced Honors Program graduation with a baccalaureate degree in a STEM field enrollment into and graduation from a Ph.D. or M.D. Ph. D program postdoctoral employment and entry into a biomedical research career in academia or industry. As part of the NIH mission, all applications submitted to the NIH in support of biomedical, behavioral, and clinical research are evaluated for scientific and technical merit through the NIH peer review system.
Scholarships may be provided to students pursuing chemical engineering or bioengineering degrees in accordance with the expressed wishes of those who donated the funds. Recipients of this scholarship shall be attending Washington State University who have completed their first two years of study in Chemical Engineering. Recipients of this scholarship shall be of at least sopho standing who is enrolled in Chemical Engineering. This endowed fund is made possible through the generous support of alumni and other friends of the Chemical Engineering Department in the College of Engineering and Architecture at Washington State University. And Ruth Verne Reaugh established a scholarship endowment in Chemical Engineering in the late 1970’s. Scholarship grants are for students attending Washington State University and majoring in chemical engineering.

The largest funder of biomedical research in the world, the National Institutes of Health, funds research in numerous areas related to human health and disease.

National Defense Science and Engineering Graduate Fellowship Program The NDSEG fellowship of the US Defense is intended for students at or near the beginning of graduate study for doctoral degrees in mathematical, physical, biological and engineering sciences. Kirschstein National Research Service Awards for Individual Predoctoral Fellowships to Promote Diversity in Health-Related Research This program encourages students from underrepresented racial and ethnic groups, individuals with disabilities, and individuals from disadvantaged backgrounds to seek research doctoral degrees in the biomedical and behavioral sciences to help increase the number of well-trained scientists from underrepresented groups.
NSF-funded scholarships support success for low-income students
The Broadening Ecosystem Attributes for Talented Scholars scholarship, which is funded by the National Science Foundation, is available to high-potential, low-income engineering students. The scholarships are offered through the longstanding CEED program, which addresses the unique challenges that underrepresented students face in pursuing an engineering education and career.
