Office of Global Education

The Japanese Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology offers scholarships to students who plan to study at Japanese Universities. Georgetown students may be eligible for the Student Scholarship, the Specialized Training College Scholarship, and the Japanese Studies Scholarship.

The Center for East Asian Studies

All funding is sponsored by theCommittee on Japanese Studies, unless otherwise noted.

Amount: $8000
. UCLA International Institute

Fellowships of up to $8,000 each will be available for a beginning or continuing UCLA graduate student working in any area of Japanese Studies. Students of Japanese American descent who specialize in Japan-related graduate studies are particularly encouraged to apply. Up to $8,000 available for a UCLA graduate student who is in a Japanese studies field. Approximately 15 fellowships of up to $5,000 each will be awarded to continuing UCLA graduate students pursuing advanced degrees in Japanese Studies.

National Scholarship Program Japanese American Citizens League

Hanayagi Rokumie Memorial Japanese Cultural Scholarship This award was established in 2006 in memory of Hanayagi Rokumie, a noted teacher of Japanese classical dance. Railroad and Mine Workers Memorial Scholarship Established by the families of Japanese American railroad and mine workers to pay tribute to the lives of these Issei and Nisei pioneers. Following the war, John opened a hostel at the West Tenth Methodist Church in Oakland for returning Japanese Americans, and Asako helped reopen the family market, Uoki Sakai, in San Francisco. This scholarship supports graduate studies for students concerned with education, social justice, and service to their communities. Fields of study may include sociology, law or education.

Chinese and Japanese Studies

With Chinese and Japanese studies as a primary or secondary major, applicant’ll also have the opportunity to for a renewable scholarship — the Chinese and Japanese Studies Scholarship — offered to incoming freshmen and transfer students. Any Valpo-bound freshman or transfer student may for the Chinese and Japanese Studies Scholarship.

Learning Abroad

Dee Foundation, the International Studies Program and the World Languages and Cultures are able offer a limited number of scholarships for declared majors to support participation in approved study abroad programs These funds can be used to cover study abroad fees and tuition. This scholarship is intended for the students.S. citizens with a 3.0 G.P.A. or higher and a desire to study abroad. Go Overseas has a resource page with information on study abroad scholarships and budgeting tips. The purpose of the scholarship is to facilitate study for American citizens at accredited Swedish universities. STA Travel has created two $2500 study abroad scholarships for students. Application instructions for this merit-based scholarship are in Japanese only.

The Whitney and Betty MacMillan Center for International and Area Studies at Yale

The Council on East Asian Studies offers the CEAS Summer Language Mini-Grants to Yale University graduate students for summer language study of Chinese, Japanese, Korean, or other East Asian languages Award: Grants generally range from $1,500 to $6,000 and can be applied to tuition, room and board at summer language programs, as well as expenses in hiring tutors for specialized, advanced language training.

Foreign Language and Area Studies Fellowships

Award preference will be given to students who are either majoring or minoring in Southeast Asian Studies through the South Southeast Asian Studies or who otherwise demonstrate a commitment to Southeast Asian Studies.
